Promoting Americanism

The American Legion has always been a stalwart champion of patriotism, morality and citizenship. Upon the pillar of Americanism is The American Legion’s devotion to law and order, the raising of wholesome youth, respectful observance of patriotic holidays and remembrances, education and law-abiding citizenship.

Citizenship

During their time in the U.S. military, Legionnaires served all over the world to ensure their fellow citizens’ safety. They have witnessed poverty, political instability, disease and war in other countries. They have a unique perspective on the threat that open borders present, a basis for The American Legion’s stance on illegal immigration. The Legion opposes illegal immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens, but fully supports opportunities for legal immigration.

U.S. Flag Protection & Education

The nation’s leading supporter of a constitutional amendment to protect the U.S. flag from desecration and also the nation’s foremost authority on the U.S. Flag Code and proper dignified disposal of unserviceable U.S. flags.

Voter Participation

The American Legion is a nonpartisan organization but takes an active role in the political process and encourages Americans to register and vote in all elections.

Legislative & Advocacy

The American Legion is hard at work in Washington and around the country on Veterans issues and issues of national importance.
