The American Legion offer a variety of programs for American Youth. Post 1187 sponsors local students for Boys State, Girls State, and the American Legion Oratorical Contest.
Boys State
Founded in 1935, American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students.
Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs.
Girls State
Female high school students who have completed their junior year are competitively selected and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units for this program, where they learn about the political process by electing officials for all levels of state government and actively running a mock government. The girls are assigned to mock cities and either the “Federalist Party” or “Nationalist Party.”
American Legion Auxiliary units in all 50 states proudly host ALA Girls State, an amazing week of learning focused on responsible citizenship, leadership, and love for God and country. Female high school juniors interested in applying to attend ALA Girls State are encouraged to contact their school counselor or their local American Legion Auxiliary units regarding the application process and deadline.
Oratorical Contest
The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. The contest also awards scholarships from $2,000 to $25,000.
We are the proud sponsors of the prior two years’ Department of Colorado oratorical winners and this years second place winner, Sara Waldrip.
Cub Scouts
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations, providing programs for young people that build character. Post 1187 is a proud sponsor of a local Cub Scout Pack 781.
American Heritage Girls Troop 8909
American Heritage Girls (AHG) was founded in 1995 by a group of parents who wanted a faith-based, scout-type character development program for their daughters.
American Heritage Girls (AHG) is a multi-denominational organization and offers Christ-Centered character and leadership development, as well as adventure and educational programs for girls 5 to 18 years of age (kindergarten through 12thgrade).
Castle Rock AHG Troop 8909 partners with our Post to help out and work with us and our Auxiliary with a number of activities and events throughout the year.
