As part of our series of remembrances for this coming Memorial Day, we share the stories of two Coloradans who died in the service of our Country.
Seaman Second Class Harold Dwayne Webster was killed on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was stationed aboard the USS Arizona.
Dwayne, who went by his middle name, joined the Navy while living in Loveland, Colorado at age 17. At the time he was a senior at Loveland High School, where he was a wrestler.
Dwayne became a seaman second class assigned to the USS Arizona and was onboard on June 25, 1941. December 7, 1941 was the one year anniversary of when he enlisted in the Navy. (Read more)
Air Force Master Sgt. Randy J. Gillespie was assigned to the 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron, Luke Air Force Base Arizona. He was killed on July 9 2007 from gunshot wounds sustained in an encounter outside of a forward operating base near Herat Afghanistan. He was 44 years old.
Randy comes from a family with a long history of serving our country, including relatives that served with the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. Randy served the military for 24 years. Randy leaves behind a wife and 4 children. Randy is from Coaldale Colorado.
As we take time this Memorial Day to remember these brave Coloradans and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, let us honor their memory by saying their names and continuing to support and care for the Veterans who have returned home.
Post 1187 will be participating in Memorial Day ceremonies in Castle Rock and Sedalia, all are welcome to join us.
