Armed Forces Day this Saturday

While May is most often associated with Mothers Day and Memorial Day, it also is the month we celebrate Armed Forces Day – this Saturday May 20th, 2023 in fact. This day is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, protecting our Nation and ensuring our safety. Let’s look into what makes Armed Forces Day so important.

First things first, what exactly is Armed Forces Day? It’s celebrated on the third Saturday of May each year and serves as an opportunity for us to show our support and gratitude to the members of the military. It’s a day to acknowledge their sacrifices, dedication, and unwavering commitment to preserving peace and freedom.

Armed Forces Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day or Veterans Day. While Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and Veterans Day pays tribute to all Veterans, Armed Forces Day specifically celebrates those currently serving in the military.

Now, you might be wondering why we need a day to appreciate our Armed Forces. The answer is simple: our military personnel play a vital role in our society. They protect us from threats, both at home and abroad. They stand ready to defend our way of life and uphold the values we hold dear. Their selfless service often takes them away from their families, and they willingly put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe. Armed Forces Day allows us to recognize and acknowledge their sacrifices and the extraordinary work they do.

So, how can we celebrate Armed Forces Day? Well, there are plenty of ways you can show your support and appreciation. Let’s look at few ideas:

  1. Attend a local event: Many communities organize parades, airshows, and other festivities to honor the armed forces. Join in the fun and show up to support the military members in your area.
  2. Fly the flag: Display the American flag or the flag of your country proudly outside your home. It’s a simple yet powerful way to show solidarity and respect. The American Legion has high quality American-made flags for sale if you need one.
  3. Volunteer: Reach out to organizations that support veterans and military families. Offer your time and skills to assist them in their efforts. Whether it’s helping with events, mentoring veterans transitioning to civilian life, or simply lending a helping hand, your contribution can make a real difference.
  4. Send a care package: Consider putting together a care package filled with goodies and necessities for deployed service members. It’s a heartfelt gesture that shows you’re thinking of them and appreciating their service. If you personally don’t know a deployed service member, there are many organizations that can help you get a care package to the right place.
  5. Educate yourself and others: Take the time to learn more about the history of the Armed Forces and the sacrifices made by military personnel. Share this knowledge with others to raise awareness and foster a culture of appreciation.

Remember, Armed Forces Day isn’t just about one day of recognition—it’s about acknowledging the commitment and sacrifices made by our Armed Forces every single day. So, let’s make it a point to express our gratitude and support not only on this special day but throughout the year.

To all the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces, we salute you! Your dedication, bravery, and sacrifice are deeply appreciated. Happy Armed Forces Day!
